Shadow Star centers on Shiina Tamai, a cheerful yet awkward twelve-year-old who discovers a mysterious, shape-shifting starfish-like creature named Hoshimaru during her seaside vacation. After returning home, Shiina learns that other children also possess similar "dragonchildren," with whom they share deep psychological bonds. While the narrative begins with a lighthearted tone, it quickly delves into darker themes of trauma, violence, and existential crisis as the dragonchildren reflect their owners' inner struggles. The series explores mature topics like murder, suicide, and societal indifference, ultimately culminating in apocalyptic scenarios.
Only the first 7 of the 12 volume series were published in English by Dark Horse comics.
